Nature's laws are tough and sometimes painful. "Kill or be killed, eat or be eaten" does happen. But why does Homo sap., who claims to have higher faculties, always subscribe to these rules? Nature also provides examples of interspecies cooperation.Lawrence describes a tame deer, a doe, who lived on his property, surrounded by NO HUNTING and NO TRESPASSING signs. Some "sports""man" killed her and was allowed to carry off her corpse, with the lame excuse that he had a license. How anyone could license an action a property owner, within his rights, prohibits on his own land, was not explained. The final incongruity was that the hunter was fined. How could that be if he were licensed?Theoretically there is a legal rule that no one may gain anything by an illegal act. But if logic meant anything, hunters and game managers could not tell us there are too many deer and too few at the same time.
Great book about animals, the woods and the environment. The interaction between Mr. Lawrence and the animals in the book makes great pictures for the mind. Wonderful stories interwoven with facts the author adds to the stories about his friends at The Place.
R D Lawrence is a great writer. I have read many of his books, however, this particular copy of The Place in the Forest is like someone copied his work and that someone made many typos and submitted it to the publisher. Never would R D Lawrence have made the errors. If you can overlook the typos, especially in the first 60 pages you will enjoy the book. The content of the book is very interesting reading. I wonder if R D Lawrence has actually read this particular copy. I hope not.
My aunt thoroughly enjoyed the book and reading it. It is one of her favorite authors. Loved it and appreciated it
