I purchased this with hopes to extend my self-taught knowledge of LiveCycle Designer. I have designed dynamic self-contained PDF forms using basic scripts and validation for use at our corporation and have a basic knowledge of LiveCycle. Was expecting to further my knowledge of the LiveCycle Designer to build more robust forms. Using the links provided in the book, I was able to find services that I could purchase from the author as well as education classes. However, smaller companies don't have unlimited budgets to support these features. Overall, I was disappointed in the contents of the book.
I strongly do not recommend this book. You are better off purchaing "PDF Forms" by Ted Padova. The second half of the Padova book covers LiveCycle specifically and in greater depth -- or at least to a depth of strong beginner or weak intermediate user.First and disappointingly, it almost appears that the Terry book is a shill for his consulting company. The book early on directs readers to his website for a working sample of forms. The sample .pdf set was hard to find. The website list his comprehensive services including classes, consulting and form development. The sample forms themselves were not put together well. In fact, just briefly pursing the collection of .pdf's revealed that several had difficulties with tabbing order and validation issues. The few sample forms were also far far less creative or well laid out than one would expect. They were far from inspirational.So ...LiveCyle is a complicated program. There is a great deal one could write about this product above and beyond what Ted Padova authored. Further, the Adobe materials are not pitched for the general public. Fair or not, the Adobe scripting materials are written well above what I think is an average to intermediate consumer's competency. Given that FormCalc is proprietary to Adobe, one would hope for a broader range of documentation from Adobe. I find the Adobe on line help to be minimally beneficial.So....what I'm driving at is this: there is a need (and perhaps even a market) for LiveCycle materials that address more than beginner issues.I was hoping to find treatment of intermeidate or advance topics in this book. The book only covers the basics and the basics are better covered in the Padova book. In fact, I was hoping to find coverage of many of the topics on the Terry site for which he offers consulting or classes through his website.This is a short, expensive and not greatfully helpful book. If you are starting out, start with "PDF Forms."

If you need a book on LiveCycle, this is an excellent choice. Very comprehensive and great examples to follow along with from a companion website.
This is a very interesting and practical book. However, it helps if you know a bit of JaveScript.Lots of examples on the companion website.Barry
As an Adobe LiveCycle user and instructor I rely heavily on the series of books from JP Terry and SmartDoc Technologies. JP's clear writing style and real-world examples make this the best book for learning how to use the latest edition of LiveCycle Designer. Highly recommended.
