Great book- however be warned, very little information about actual volcanoes (which is what I personally was hoping for) but very descriptive firsthand or narrative accounts of the Mount St Helens eruption of 1980. Therefore, this book, in my opinion, should be entitled Mount St Helens Eruption, since this is the vast majority of the content. Three or four pages only, describing what volcanoes actually are and where they are found, etc. However, I must say, my 6 and a half year old daughter loves the book, so my opinion might not be important; but until she can go on here and express herself you're stuck with it...
Does your 2.5yo love volcanos? Did he (or she) enjoy the eyewitness book on them? Then you probably think this book is for your early reader. No, no it’s not. Unless you are ready to teach the powerful destruction powers and disasters of nature... Not what we were looking for, but maybe it’s what you are looking for. Be warned, one of the many gems, is the scared family trapped inside their home for 4 days.
This is a very interesting and educational book. My 6 year old found it fascinating and engrossing when I read it for him!
These are great books for children learning to read and for children who don't like to read "long: books. Also these books have a ton of information in them that keep my children interested on reading to the next page. I find that my children will read these books over and over again.
My son hates to read and anything school related but is always fascinated by volcanoes...somehow I took a chance and bought volcanoes on kindle and he read the entire thing that night ...My son is seven years old. I fell asleep and he told me "Mommy I couldn't put down the book...I inhaled it all" Go figure. Anything that gets that kind of review deserves 10 stars in "my books".
This book made for a fun co-reading bedtime series with my independent (kindergartener) reader. We trade off on pages since it's a longer book. Chapter sizes are perfect for nightly stories.
I love the whole Step into Reading series. The information is excellent and they are entertaining. The lower levels are long enough that a beginning reader gets a challenge but isn't overwhelmed with length. Level 4 is good for a confident reader, even if they still struggle with sounding words out. Reading comprehension really begins to get exercised at this level.
This book is informative and easily read. I used it with my second language learners to support the earth science unit I was teaching in 4th grade. The photos and illustrations are excellent. It is well organized, and exciting. It is an Accelerated Reader book so the students can take a vocabulary test and a comprehension test on line to demonstrate what they learned and to win points. Even my most recent immigrants could read it and earn their 0.5 points in comprehension. Good book!!
