About the Author
Han Kang was born in Gwangju, South Korea, and moved to Seoul at the age of ten. She studied Korean literature at Yonsei University. Her writing has won the Yi Sang Literary Prize, the Today's Young Artist Award, and the Korean Literature Novel Award. The Vegetarian, her first novel to be translated into English, was published by Portobello Books in 2015 and won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize. She is also the author of Human Acts (Portobello, 2016) and The White Book (Portobello, 2017). She is based in Seoul.Deborah Smith's translations from the Korean include two novels by Han Kang, The Vegetarian and Human Acts, and two by Bae Suah, A Greater Music and Recitation. In 2015 Deborah completed a PhD at SOAS on contemporary Korean literature and founded Tilted Axis Press. In 2016 she won the Arts Foundation Award for Literary Translation. You might want to hate this book because it seems ludicrous: a list of white objects, with brief reflections or stories attached. I feared it would be pretentious, or boring But it's not. The writing is gorgeous, affecting, thunderous...there's a list of superlatives on the back in case you need help finding adequate words when you're done. I did. This is great. Han Kang is great. Fade to black.
A masterpiece. Beautiful writing and imagery; each chapter reads like a prose poem, each description of white as delicate as a Japanese painting, a haiku, a piece of porcelain. An exquisite meditation on a colour, on the tenacity and fragility of life, of the human spirit.
Disturbing yet peaceful, creative. I love everything from Han Kang that has been translated.

I have enjoyed the previous two books by this Korean writer. They were both written in narrative form and both were exceptional. This book is shortlisted for the International Man Booker Prize 2018. It is very short with lots of empty while pages - quite intentional as the name of the book implies. This is not a book to read in one sitting but perhaps pick up at random moments. The writing is fine but I would definitely not call this a novel Consider it a book of poetry because that is how it reads- brief snippets loosely tied together by descriptions of white objects. It didn't move me or provoke thought. This is not my type of book. A disappointment unless poetry is something you enjoy.
Get at library so you do not waste your money. I read her first book, The Vegetarian, and enjoyed it. This is horrible, pretentious and not a hybrid fiction/poetry but boring. Could not finish.
The writing is quite fine and it is a very interesting and deep book, in its way. Except it is essentially the author's own reinterpretation of Maggie Nelson's earlier book. Perhaps Nelson has sparked her own genre, poetical/prose meditations on a single colour?
"Everything was back within the borders of itself, holding its breath. Holding its breath, and waiting for the next fog". -- Fog"The White Book" is, simply put, an aesthetic masterpiece . The book itself is minimalistic and comprised of short meditations on various white objects spaced with black and white images. Together, all of these short passages tell the story of a girl who lives in the perpetual shadow of her mother's first child; an infant girl who died when she was only two hours old. As the narrator moves through her life, that tragedy is ever present in the back of her mind.This book is quiet, the language thoughtful, lyrical and poignant. No passage exceeds two pages and it doesn't need to. Each page can be absorbed in a single minute though the effects of Kang's words linger. I found myself re-reading nearly every section numerous times not because it was difficult to understand, but because the words were so crisp and clear that it seemed an injustice to breeze through the pages.In fact, "The White Book" reads like a diary. Every passage feels contained in its own moment in time, reflecting the narrator's sense of curiosity as she examines everything she comes across throughout her day. The physical world is an outlet through which history and feeling pass through, each white thing acting as a gateway to an insightful conclusion about humanity. Each passage ends with a strong final sentence that lingers in the air even after the book is closed.One such passage that I come back to again and again is this one titled "Breath-cloud"."On cold mornings, that first white cloud of escaping breath is proof that we are living. Proof of our bodies' warmth. Cold air rushes into dark lungs, soaks up the heat of our body and is exhaled as perceptible form, white flecked with grey. Our lives' miraculous diffusion, out into the empty air".Alone, this passage is beautiful, but within the context of the cold winter days described throughout the surrounding pages makes these four sentences especially sharp. I find that it perfectly captures the continuity of Kang's imagery: the blend of darkness and white and the way humanity interacts with the universe, blending with the environment so every moment seems to reflect one's contemporary circumstance and lingering history.Overall, "The White Book" cannot be truly be categorized as a novel or a memoir, rather, I find it best to view the book as an anthology of captured moments in time– a polished diary of personal and philosophical meditations brought about by ordinary objects.
