Stick Kid, by Peter Holwitz

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-This poignant metaphor for changing parent and child relationships begins: "I once drew a stick kid./Just a quick little stick kid." The penciled figure grows, so the artist must draw new clothes, friends to keep him company, and things for him to do: "I drew it all./I drew it good./I always drew the best I could." Soon the stick kid drives away on a road that has been created for him and disappears for awhile. Eventually, a beautiful new car that the artist has never seen before appears and the door opens to reveal a stick man, his lovely stick wife, and their own stick kid. The narrator proudly concludes, "I once drew a stick kid,/and he grew up well." The casual ending and rhyming text make this picture book fun to read aloud. Fans of Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree (HarperCollins, 1964) will find this parent a little less self-sacrificing but of the same belief that adults give their children everything to prepare them to make their own way in the world. Holwitz dabs a bit of Magic Marker and chalk color here and there but, in tune with the spare narrative, he keeps the design simple and the pages uncluttered. Young readers will delight in the idea of a drawing that comes to life, will get the intergenerational tie, and may want to create some stick figures, too.-Susan Hepler, Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. This is just the sweetest, most wonderful book I've ever read. I think the comparisons to The Giving Tree are off base, as the message here is infinitely better. The fact that it is out of print is a real bummer, but used copies in good condition abound and I've started buying them to give to friends as gifts.

I found this book "accidently" at the library. While my three-year-old was looking for Clifford books, I was looking for something I'd have more interested in reading to him. I picked it out from random because I liked the title. I checked it out because I liked the cover. I ended up buying it because I loved the book!Perhaps both Max and I were right: he enjoyed the Clifford books and they were written with his age in mind. I loved Stick Kid and it was written more for me than him.I read it to Max three nights running before my wife joined us for story time. I read Stick Kid. When I get to that part where you finally realize what it's about, she cried on cue.I've since bought Scribbles: loved it to. I'm waiting for his third book to arrive at more door step!Stick Kid: buy it for every new parent and for every parent whose wrestling with their emotions seeing their kid grow up too fast!

Great book!

A wonderful, easy book for kids! My 4 and 6 year old love it! Definitely a family favorite!

This seemed to be a tough book to find and it was small in size but nice.

This is a fantastic children's book. In an elementary literature class I took, I was required to read and review 200 children's books. This book was by far my favorite.

My 17 month year old is so captivated by this book and its illustrations! This is one of his favorites and wants it read to him just about every night. I enjoy the story which is touching and a perfect read for parent and child.

Adorable book. Great for fun read alouds with children and also a great example of rhyming text. Illustrations are simple, but fun. Any child or adult can relate to this book because we have all drawn stick figures before, the only difference is that this one Stick Kid gets a back story. This book can also be used in the classroom, or at home to get children to draw a picture, whether it be their own stick person and get them to write or tell you a story about it. You can even have them make a series of pictures and have the kid(s) make their own book.
