First, I'm a firm believer in this book! Before reading and applying what I learned, my 4 month old son was sleeping in 2 to 3 hour chunks. If you're like me and have to pump in addition to that, you know how exhausting that can be! I was quite ignorant about how sleep works with babies, and it was apparent in how poorly my son slept his first four months of life. I was miserable and exhausted, and I needed help. Luckily, someone suggested this book to me when I was asking for help, and now my son is sleeping through the night and having solid naps.This book isn't just a quick fix kind of book that gives you tips and tricks. The author starts the book giving you the "theory" behind the sleep training methods that she presents in the middle of the book. Basically, she explains how baby sleep works (naps, nighttime, overtired babies, etc.), what you should and shouldn't be doing to get your baby to sleep (and why), and then gives a couple chapters explaining how to help your newborn sleep based on week periods (0-6 weeks, 6-12, 12-20). The middle of the book is dedicated to a couple sleep training methods that she suggests you begin around 3 to 4 months, with the approval of your child's pediatrician. The methods presented are extinction CIO, Ferber CIO, and a gradual fading of sleep props method. The subsequent chapters deal with problem solving when you're stuck, tricky situations (multiple kids, traveling, etc.), "Reality Check" (explaining that nothing will always be perfect and completely predictable), helping parents sleep, etc.Something I really like about the book is that there is a summary at the end of each chapter that contains all of the key points from that chapter. It is super helpful when you need a quick refresher of what you just read, especially if you're sleep deprived when reading the book.Final note: If you're completely not okay with any cry it out method, then this probably isn't the book for you, though it will still be very helpful for understanding naps. She does devote a section at the end of the book to explain why cry it out won't harm your baby (my son's pediatrician agreed). It's worth reading if you aren't completely convinced against CIO.If you've read this far, I'll end with saying that I highly recommend this book to anyone who is about to be a first time parent. This author is not a pediatrician. I read her book and I was determined to have my baby become a good sleeper. I focused so much in sleep for the first six weeks of his life, I felt like I didn’t get to enjoy him as a newborn. I was constantly looking at the clock to see what his wave time had been! Then he would take a 45 min nap and we would be back to obsessing about the wake time. Anyway this author is not a pediatrician and she is not qualified to be giving new parents advice on young babies sleep.She has written a book full of very bad advice for breastfeeding moms. She says formula fed babies don’t sleep any better than breastfed. Maybe they do and maybe they don’t. But formula fed babies can eat LESS Often. So to imply that there is no difference between formula and breast fed babies on sleep patterns is very dangerous. It is a very dangerous premise to set. Breastfed babies often need to wake more often during the night to feed as breast milk digests more quickly than formula. The author has these cute anecdotes that I have to think must be made up. One involves a 10 week old sleeping through the night. The parents moved the bedtime up to 7 or 8 PM, and suddenly the baby was sleeping through to 6 AM. Because of this story, I thought it would be OK for my son to sleep through the night from 10 PM - 6 AM. I didn’t realize that a breastfed baby cannot miss a night feeding that young. As a result my son did not gain weight properly. This is a HUGE problem. This can lead to failure to thrive. My pediatrician was extremely concerned. She wanted me to supplement with formula. My son had fallen off the growth chart. My milk supply dropped because the demand/frequency of feeding dropped. Working to get my supply back up was incredibly difficult. And trying to get my sons weight up is also extremely difficult and stressful. I realize the author has two children. That does not make her an expert on babies health. In fact if you listen to her advice like I did you may end up with a child that is underweight in the early months of life which could lead to many many many more development problems. Not to mention it may kill your dream of exclusively breastfeeding your child to 6 months, as recommended by WHO. I can’t stress enough how troubling this book for breastfeeding mamas. Don’t believe the stories and ask your lactation consultant what sleep should look like for a breast fed baby.

I'm not recommending this book because it promotes CIO, although I have no problem with that method and may use it in the near future. I am recommending this book because it is straight forward and gives a well-rounded approach to sleep training. As a new parent, I don't have the patience to read a book that could have been condensed into some informative bullet points on a powerpoint presentation (looking at you The Happiest Baby On The Block!!!). If you are open to Ferberizing, then this is the book for you.

This book was amazing when it came to explaining how the sleep cycle works, how to read your baby's drowsiness cues, how to get them to nap, the importance of naps and ways to soothe the baby to sleep. But at the end of it, it basically recommends the cry it out method. It gives plenty of examples of gentle soothing and how they don't really work until you finally do the "extinction method" (put your baby down, close their door at bedtime and don't open it again until morning). I'd suggest this book for 0-12 week babies as it's been very helpful. It helped me understand that my baby needs a TON of naps during the day, and by doing that, she'll be easier to put down at night and therefore will sleep better. All in all, her biggest belief is in the cry it out method. With the techniques she gives prior (ie: the importance of establishing a good nap routine), you can hopefully avoid the cry it out method.
