About the Author
Cynthia R. King, PhD, NP, MSN, RN, CNL, FAAN, is an owner and consultant of Special Care Consultants. She specializes in consulting in health care and nursing as well as writing and editing. Previously, Dr. King was a full professor and developed a clinical nurse leader program while at Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina. She has presented numerous times at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Clinical Nurse Leader (AACN CNL) conference on the template she developed for a CNL review course on how to best study for the CNL certification exam. Dr. King has worked as a clinician (staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner), educator, administrator, and researcher. She presents nationally and internationally and has been a keynote speaker at several major meetings. Dr. King has published extensively, including four books and numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, and she has served as editor-in-chief of two nursing journals. She serves on numerous local, regional, and national committees and boards of nursing associations, nonprofits, and foundations.

I used this book to study for the CNL exam in addition to going over a few flashcards on quizlet, and passed the test. I read 2/3 of the book, got bored, and ended up just doing the 200 practice questions and 6 case studies in the back of the book. I thought it was more helpful to take the practice test and go over the rationales rather than read the entire book from cover to cover. The explanations were brief and pretty straightforward. Remember, the book is only a review. It does not cover everything. But overall, it's quite helpful. The only negatives are that I found several test questions in the book that were repeats, and it only 6 case study sample questions.
This book, indeed, was a wise investment. It's the updated version of this text which sorely was needed. It's concise, well written and easy to understand.
I highly recommend reading this book from cover to cover prior to taking the CNL exam. I also downloaded the CNL app, did the 200 practice questions on the app, reviewed the questions I missed, and felt completely prepared before and during the exam. I knew I passed before finding out my results.
Studied this book and did all the sample tests/questions. Reviewed some flash cards on quizlet and in a matter of 2 weeks I took the exam and passed! Just read the material especially on how to answer certain questions and rationale.
This is a great resource and required text for my Clinical Nurse Leader Program
Very helpful in studying for the CNL certification. My professor used this book for her class.
